MAMe Presents the 2011 Manufacturing Summit Report and the Industry Partnership Model to Governor LePage

Education and Training:
Maine Industry Partnership Initiative/Sector Development: The MAMe and members of the Board of Directors presented the 2011 Manufacturing Summit Report and Industry Partnership/Sector Development Strategy model to Governor LePage and Senior Policy Advisor, John Butera on December 12, 2011. Joining us was Maine Dept. of Labor Commissioner Bob Winglass and Garret Oswald, SWIB Director and co-chair of the MAMe Education Committee.
The Manufacturing Summit Report, presented by Summit Chair, Neal Prescott, highlighted the areas of concerns and challenges facing Maine’s manufacturing sector including: workforce development, marketing/branding and opportunities for the sector, the association and the state to address. Aligned with the results of the summit was the Industry Partnership model, targeting a demand and data driven system to address the training needs of Maine’s industries. The Governor stated that the Industry Partnership model is critical to creating jobs in Maine, providing effective training to the demand of industry and is “exactly what Maine needs”. The following day, Governor LePage met with the new State Workforce Investment Board (SWIB) and said the Maine Industry Partnership model will be the cornerstone for Maine Workforce System!
Our sincere thanks to the MAMe board members, Ron Dupuis, IDEXX, Education Chair, Chip Roche, Newfab, Inc., Chair of MAMe board and a newly appointed SWIB member, Neal Prescott, Summit Chair and Paul Tyson, Marketing Chair for their dedication and commitment to the association’s efforts to create the summit, marketing and education/training strategies!

Cluster/Sector Development:
THE MAINE AEROSPACE ALLIANCE (MEAA) will continue hosting B2B forums in 2012 for Maine’s MEAA members in contract development, increasing the supply chain and networking for members. Please contact Rich Grich for more information and how to become involved!
HIGH PERFORMANCE TEXTILE CLUSTER: MAMe will conduct a statewide and industry targeted assessment of Maine’s High Performance, Advanced Textile Manufacturing Industry. The survey will assess textile companies in Maine to better understand the supply chain, vertical integration, branding/marketing and education and training challenges of this industry.
MEDICAL DEVICE MANUFACTURING CLUSTER: MAMe, BAM and USM continue to collaborate on this vital manufacturing sector. In the coming months, we will evaluate the feasibility study findings and plan for a large scale implementation project.

Compliance Plus Program: MAMe met with DEP Commissioner Patti Aho, Rick Snow, Director of Bureau of Labor Standards and Jay Martin, Business Liaison in the Secretary of State’s office to present the Compliance Plus Program. The model of Compliance services to assist members on how to become and sustain compliance within the company will be available soon. Our challenge is finding seed funding to implement the program for industry members.

MAMe Manufacturing Marketing Plan: MAMe board members, Paul Tyson and Neal Prescott, joined Lisa Martin, MAMe and Anne Gauthier, Texas Instruments in a meeting with DECD Commissioner George Gervais and Deputy Commissioner Deb Neuman to present the statewide Manufacturing Marketing Plan. The plan, developed with the input for the Manufacturers Roundtable and MAMe Marketing and Education Committees, targets public media outreach and the education system (superintendents, educators and guidance counselors, Adult Education, etc.) in marketing the sector for it’s high technology, high wages and high skills. The plan will include creating a pipeline of qualified applicants, telling the story of manufacturing as a viable career choice and attracting more youth and adults into the sector. The plan has a component for an economic impact study of the costs associated with not having enough skilled workers to fill the jobs in Maine.

Business Insurance Services: MAMe Paradigm Health Plan is enrolling members into the Paradigm Health Plan. We can also arrange for company meetings with Walker Winslow, Paradigm Health Consultants. If you want more information, please call us at 207-854-2153 or email info@mmainemfg.com

Tour of Shipyard Brewery

On Wednesday, December 14th tour goers gathered in the gift shop area of Shipyard Brewery in downtown Portland, enjoying samples of the beer and soda products manufactured at the facility. The attendees were welcomed by Joe Allen, Sappi, followed by a short film, presented in the Hall of Fame, telling the story of the origins and development of the historic site into what is there today.
The tour then began where the process begins: the water room. We were guided through the entire process, learning the careful methods and systems in place to produce high quality beer. Each room had its own function and aroma from hops to fermenting sugars in massive tanks. The tour ended where the process ends: bottling and packaging (if you don’t include enjoying it).
Portland Pie Pizza and more Shipyard beer samples were provided during the trivia and raffle. Trivia prizes of assorted Shipyard gifts were given to those who first remember key facts of the complex manufacturing processes. The raffle prizes included APICS CPIM and CSCP course vouchers, 100$ cash donated by Cote Crane and MAMe shirts. A big thank you to Shipyard Brewery for hosting this great tour!

Bodycote Suffield

Bodycote Suffield is proud to announce our recent approval by Sikorsky for electron beam welding. Suffield is one of only two known approved sources in the Northeast for electron beam welding. Those specifications for which Suffield is approved include SS8759; MIL-STD-2219; and MIL-W-46132. Bodycote Suffield is also proud to announce the renewal in November, 2011, of the NADCAP certification for electron beam welding. This certification is good for two years, which is the maximum timeframe available. Two consecutive audits with excellent results enabled this timeframe, compared to the normal eighteen -month cycle. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Hoffman at kelly.hoffman@bodycote.com
