MAMe 22nd Annual Golf Tournament Another Successful Day!
“It’s all about the kids” was heard again and again at the 22nd MAMe scholarship golf tournament held on August 18 at Spring Meadows in Gray! The tournament brought out over 136 members, guests and volunteers of the association to golf for scholarships. Each year, MAMe hosts this tournament to raise money for the scholarship program. This year, MAMe awarded $8,000 to 16 worthy students attending the University of Maine system, Maine Community College System and Maine Maritime Academy. Scholarship recipients Cameron Campbell and Travis Elliot join us this year. Both are UM Engineering students and we are very pleased that Governor Paul LePage joined us this year to golf!

MAMe Northern Maine Tour 2011
The Manufacturers Association of Maine and the Maine Aerospace Alliance staff traveled to beautiful Northern Maine on August 23rd and 24th to tour member companies in the area.
On August 23rd the group toured CAM Manufacturing, a machining facility located in Presque Isle. Mark Brown and Marc Jones, co-owners of CAM, discussed CAM's history and technological growth over the years. This was followed by a tour of the manufacturing facility. Student MAMe member, Micah Smaldone, of SMCC joined the group.
The group wrapped up the first day of the Northern Maine Tour with a dinner hosted by Northern Maine Community College. Tim Crowley, President of NMCC spoke about the Trade and Technical Program at the college. He highlighted the importance of these programs in the continued growth of manufacturing in the state of Maine. Duane Gushee, of D&G Machines joined the MAMe tour for this dinner and discussion.
On August 24th, the group joined with Congressman Mike Michaud on his "Make it in Maine!" Tour at Smith & Wesson in Houlton. Smith & Wesson hosted a delicious barbecue followed by a tour of their manufacturing facility. MAMe was joined by members Duane Gushee of D & G Machines, John Belding AMC Director at the University of Maine. Chad Walton of Snap Space Solutions also attended as a guest of MAMe.
The MAMe group wrapped up with a tour of Katahdin Log Homes, a manufacturer of cedar log homes located in Oakfield, Maine. The process of creating a log home was explained from design to the manufacturing of each log to the innovative recycling and waste reduction processes put in place by President of Katahdin Log Homes, David Gordon.
The Congressman concluded his "Make in Maine Tour" with a Manufacturing Round Table in Bangor on August 25th.

Business Growth Services (BGS) Every day, members contact MAMe for business services. These requests are vetted by the BGS consulting network to understand what is keeping the company awake at night. Each and every company are visited to understand the scope is need (BGS does NOT sell services!!) Education and Training: Maine Industry Partnership Initiative/Sector Development:
The Manufacturers Roundtable for Education and Training: Led by MAMe, the roundtable will focus on strategies of a statewide marketing with jobs emphasis. The Roundtable members are developing a statewide manufacturing marketing campaign and strategic plan to educate and market the sector that will attract more skilled workers into the industry.
Compliance Plus Program: The Compliance Plus Program design team have finalized the Compliance Plus Program development. The Compliance services will assist members on how to become and sustain compliance within the company. Training and direct assistance for members will be available soon.
Cluster/Sector Development: MAMe has been busy assessing the manufacturing sector for a number of cluster activities including the alternative energy survey and the medical device manufacturing cluster survey. Both these survey data results will formulate plans to assist the industries with business development activities, training, certifications and overall business needs. The newest cluster to emerge from the Manufacturing Summit is the RF/Wireless Communication/Electronics industry. We will begin developing training for the industry members and work with the universities to address education gaps.
Business Insurance Services: MAMe Paradigm Health will host informational sessions in September in Waterville and Greater Portland area. The sessions will be sent out to all members indicating time and place!

August is a Busy Aerospace Month
The MEAA represented you at The Boeing Supplier Diversity Symposium in Seattle on August 18th. We are used our new ACT database reporting system to present MEAA member capabilities to Boeing. We networked and met with Boeing purchasing, Primary and Secondary suppliers to Boeing and other participating suppliers. There were 300 companies attending the Boeing invitation only event.
MEAA is attending and exhibiting at the Aviation Business Expo being held in conjunction with The Great State of Maine Air Show at Brunswick Executive Airport from Aug. 26th thru Aug. 28th. The MEAA and other members will have booths at the show. www.greatstateofmaineairshow.us

Bath Iron Works: BIW recently reached an agreement with the U.S. Navy on contracts for the next two ships in the DDG 1000 destroyer plan. Senator Susan Collins announced that the U.S. Navy will award General Dynamics, the parent company of BIW, contracts for the second and third DDG 1000 ships. BIW is in the process of building the first ship in the line.
Biovation was awarded the New Technology Product of the Year Award by The Technology Association of Maine for their biopolymer product line. Biovation manufactures antimicrobial formulations and non-woven fiber products for food packaging and wound care in Boothbay.

New Job Training Resources for Maine Green Businesses
Grant resources to train new and existing employees are now available for green businesses in York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, Waldo, Penobscot, Hancock and Piscataquis Counties. Coastal Enterprises, Inc. has received funding of $250,000 from the U.S. Department of Labor to offer customized training to upgrade the skills of both dislocated and currently-employed workers, in order to more effectively match the workforce needs of businesses.
The program is designed to grow the green jobs sector in Maine. CEI can provide training funds to businesses in the renewable energy and energy efficiency, value-added agriculture, and green manufacturing sectors. These funds will provide businesses with resources for on-the-job and customized training, utilizing and complementing existing education and training programs, and will be designed to address the specific training gaps identified by the three targeted industry sectors.
