2012 Manufacturing Summit
Leads the Way
Students were operating robots, showcasing aerospace designs and wind blades made with CAD systems and Maine inventiveness. Maine businesses showcased new and advanced technology being manufactured in Maine. Manufacturers, guests, educators, labor and economic development representatives mingled among cars, planes, trucks and planes at the Owls Head Transportation Museum.
The 2012 Manufacturing Summit was phenomenal! As a continuation of last year, the summit focused on understanding what issues, policies, concerns and solutions for Maine manufacturers. This year was as powerful and substantial in learning what manufacturers are doing statewide on the issues of education and training, health care, supply chain, logistics and marketing solutions.
This year, MAMe presented the Maine Industry Partnership initiative, a model that has been recognized and embraced by the administration as the “cornerstone” of Maine Workforce Development System. Companies learned about the cost of health care, what is driving costs and how companies can participate in the MAMe Paradigm Health Plan. Companies learned about local, national and international marketing strategies. Companies continue to say that Maine needs to support marketing of manufacturing to youth, students and educators as a viable career choice.
Our sincere thanks to our speakers Dr. Larry Luter and Ms. Deb Neuman. Our sponsors: Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, Maine Technical Institute, CEI Coastal Enterprises, Inc., Albin, Randall & Bennett, CCB, Inc., TrakTec and New England CAD Technologies. What is Lean Sigma?
Lean Sigma is a combination of two distinct process improvement techniques. Lean Sigma (sometimes called Lean Six Sigma) combines the two techniques to deliver increased quality at an increased speed and at a reduced cost.
Lean - known best from its use at Toyota, is the reduction of waste in any process in order to maximize profit and reduce costs. Its tools identify where "Waste" is in the current processes and how best to eliminate the waste. A manufacturer that is lean uses the minimum amount of manpower, materials, money, machines, space etc. to get the job done on time.
Six Sigma - The phrase "Six Sigma" refers to the mathematical concept of making only 3.4 defects per million opportunities (99.99966 percent good). Six Sigma tools, brought to the forefront by Motorola, are used to find and eliminate process variation. Six Sigma seeks to identify and remove the causes of defects and errors in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management methods, including a statistical approach. Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization follows a sequence of steps, referred to as DMAIC [Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.
