Opportunitiy to Sponsor Student Learning
New England Electric Railway Historical Society's Seashore Trolley Museum's Townhouse Restoration Shop is partnering with Maine's Department of Labor Pre-apprenticeship Program to provide training to high school students in the surrounding area. The pre-apprenticeship program will provide an opportunity for young students to receive unique on the job training where they can apply what they have learned in the classroom to restoration of historic streetcars. They will be mentored by shop personnel and learn how to deal with differential expansion, stress relieving, heat shrinking and joining old steel with new. They will be exposed to all sorts of scenarios and learn how to make solid decisions, when to arc gouge and when to use a torch or plasma cutter, when is it better to MIG weld or stick or TIG.
Manual machining will also be mentored using lathes vertical and horizontal mills, surface grinders and drill presses. They will learn how to grind their own tools for turning and boring use rotary tables, chase threads and make jigs and fixtures to machine parts and turn journal bearings. This will also give them the confidence they need so when they turn on the power feed and begin the machining they will feel secure they cranked the table to the right setting and the process begins. They will become tuned to the smell, sound and feel of the machine and become part of the “essence” of machining.
They will learn babbitting and hot riveting, blending lines, straightening chassis, quality workmanship and most importantly pride. They will see their efforts go into the final end product; the restoration of a piece of American history.
We need your help and are asking if your organization would be willing to sponsor a student.
Please consider donating to sponsor a student to allow them to gain experience in metalworking skills.
Questions can be directed to the Townhouse Restoration Shop Foreman Bernie Bisnette at 207-967-2540 or email Apprentice@neerhs.org
Thank you so much, Bernie Bisnette
