What's new in BGS (Business Growth Services)

From farm to fork: Food safety
The New FDA Food Safety Modernization Act
What does it mean for your business?

Earlier this year, President Obama signed into law the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) aimed to ensure the safety of the United States food supply. The law “requires the agency to build a new food safety system,” says Michael R. Taylor, FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Foods. “This new system will better leverage federal resources and it will make industry a major partner in safeguarding the health of U.S. consumers.”

Food industry experts are talking about the new regulatory requirements affecting the safety of the food supply chain and the need for management systems within food producers. The new and updated ISO 22000, HACCP and other standards for food safety and quality have taken affect and need to be understood and followed.

Hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) is a systematic preventive approach to food safety that addresses physical, chemical and biological hazards as a means of prevention rather than finished product inspection. HACCP is used in the food industry to identify potential food safety hazards, so that key actions can be taken to reduce or eliminate the risk of the hazards being realized. The system is used at all stages of food production and preparation processes including packaging, distribution, etc.
Aside from being a requirement, food producers can and will benefit tremendously by implementing these quality standards.

Submitted by John DuBois, optimize, Inc., a BGS network provider for the MAMe Business Growth Services Division. John can be reached at  info@optimizeincorporated.com or call (207) 356-4364
