Industry Partnership Education/Training Annoucement
IPC 610/620 issues for MAMe Members
The BGS (Business Growth Services) group has recently taken on a project regarding the increasing needs within the manufacturing sector for IPC 610/620 training and certification. For those who aren’t familiar with the term “IPC 620” it is certification program for employees that are dealing with minor welding and assembly of cord attachments. Most recently, Maine companies have had to find a vendor for the training program, with the closest providers being in NH. Also an issue is the seemingly high cost for the training.
MAMe has been working on the Industry Partnership strategy to create a consortium of industry that need/require training and by working with industry; we’d find a less expensive source and at the same time enjoy greater flexibility of instructor availability. Recently, SMCC learned of our interest and contacted Lisa with the news that in late January or early February, they would have a qualified IPC 620 instructor as part of their education staff! With that news, we’re off to the races. We currently contacted about ten companies and are assessing the training needs and number of trainees.
Very shortly MAMe will be working with the Maine Department of Labor and possibly the Maine Quality Center to structure this training program. If you have need for initial or ongoing PC/610 training, please call MAMe for additional at 207-854-2153 or email info@mainemfg.com

Whats new in Business Growth Services (BGS)
The Evolution of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
RFID Technology has come a long way with regards to cost and technology and may be within reach of many small businesses. Some businesses are starting to use passive tags RFID to not only track material, but are also to track tools, paperwork and even people.
There are a number of different products on the street. One uses a Last Point Read (LPR) system which provides the last known location of a tagged item. The basic concept is to associate a tag, put the tag on the item you want to track and install RFID Readers and Antennas in the areas that you want covered.
Typically this location becomes the start point of a search should a tagged item go missing or if a tagged item needs to be retrieved. Tags become excited when passing close to an RFID antenna due to the radio waves being emitted. In this excited state they transmit their unique identification number back to the RFID Reader where it is then saved in a database for future reference.
